I. Historical:
A) Title: Taken from Greek versions, “departure” (Exodus 19:1)
B) Author: Moses (17:14; 24:4; 34:27; Mark 12:26)
C) Date: Exodus occurred in 1446 B. C. (1 Kings 6:1 (966 + 480=1446)); Moses wrote it between his 40th and 120th year (Exodus 7:7; Deuteronomy 34:7); Exodus covers a period of almost 1 year (Exodus 12:18; 16:1; 19:1; 40:17)
II. Thematic: Exodus continues the history of Israel’s bondage in Egypt and deliverance. It also reveals God’s fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 12:1-3, 7).
III. Christological:
A) Redemption (Exodus 1-18; 6:6; 15:13; 4:23; 7:16; Romans 6:11) and Revelation (19-40)
B) Typology of Moses (Hebrews 3:5, 6)
C) Exodus (Luke 9:31)
D) Passover (Exodus 12; 1 Corinthians 5:7)
E) Ratification of the Covenant (Exodus 24:8; Luke 22:20)
F) Covenant Community (Exodus 19:5,1 Peter 2:5, 9)

Today's Outreach
A conviction of God's sovereignty in salvation is a tremendous incentive to evangelize. An understanding that it is the power of God alone that draws sinners to Himself (John 6:44) and not the ability of man, neither the sinner's will nor the evangelsit's ability, is motivation to share the gospel as we rest in God's purpose to make alive and open the hearts. Today, I had the opportunity to give away Vietnamese Bibles at a couple of businesses owned by Vietnamese people. I came away thinking that I did not get very far in our discussion of Christ, but assured that the Bibles I left them may be effectual to their conversion if God inclines their hearts to open and read.So today I pray:
"God, I ask of you to open the hearts and give a saving interest of Christ and your word to the Vietnamese people I talked to today. May the Bibles that are on their desks be opened and read and prove mighty in convicting their hearts of sin and revealing Jesus Christ to their minds and hearts. I know your Spirit can prove to be irresistable. May your will be done in Christ. Amen."

Confession, Lesson 4
Outline of 1689 London Confession of faith, Chapter 1 Paragraphs 6-10
I. The Sufficiency of (1.6):
A) Explicitly sets forth all that is necessary for the christian faith and life (2 Tim. 3:15-17; Gal. 1:8,9).
B) Inward illumination is necessary to spiritually understand (John 6:45; 1 Cor. 2:9-12).
C) Not all circumstances are explicitly taught but can be dictated through nature and christian prudence (1 Cor. 11:13,14; 1 Cor. 14:26,40).
II. The Perspicuity of (1.7):
A) Clear concerning things necessary for faith and life (2 Pet. 3:16; Pss. 19:7; 119:130).
B) Clarity of Scripture doesn’t negate responsibility to diligently use means to learn
III. The Accessibility of (1.8):
A) The languages of the inspired autographs, Hebrew & Greek (Romans 3:2)
B) God has preserved his word in a sate of purity (Isaiah 8:20)
C) Christians have a responsibility to make known the word in all languages (John 5:39; 1 Cor. 14:6,9,11,12,24,28; Colossians 3:16)
IV. The Conclusiveness of (1.9-10):
A) As a rule of Bible interpretation (2 Pet. 1:20, 21; Acts 15:15, 16)
B) To judge all beliefs and opinions by (Matt. 22:29, 31, 32; Eph. 2:20; Acts 28:23)

Ephesians 2:10
I. God’s Masterpiece (2 Cor. 5:17; John 3:8; Psalm 100:3)
"men go abroad to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the season, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering." Augustine
II. Good Works are the result (Consequence) of Salvation (James 2:17; Titus 2:14)
“In order, therefore, to secure the gospel from so fatal a charge, God has made a special provision that good works shall occupy in it a high and honorable place. That good works should save is one thing, that they should be wholly set aside is another. Not only, then, shall they, according to God's appointment, not be set aside, but they shall be raised in worth and value. They shall be made a means of glorifying God—which sets on them a higher and nobler stamp than if they merely effected or concurred in the salvation of man. They shall be done from higher, better, and purer motives—they shall be wrought by the blessed Spirit—they shall be accepted by and approved of God as fruits of righteousness, which grow upon and manifest the living branches of the only true Vine.” J. C. Philpot
III. Good Works are Pre-ordained (Rom. 9:23; Heb. 12:14; Eph. 2:2; Matt. 12:33)
IV. Exhortations to Good Works and God’s Pre-ordination do not Conflict (Titus 3:8; Matt. 5:16; 2 Tim. 3:17; Phil. 2:12-13)

Ephesians 2:8, 9
I. By Grace Are Ye Saved:
A) Basis is God’s unmerited favor (1:7; 2:5, 7; Acts 15:11; Rom. 3:24; 5:20)
B) Salvation is not by works (powerless to improve, change, cooperate) Rom. 3:20, 27; 9:11; 11:6; 2 tim. 2:9; Titus 3:3-5)
C) You are saved now (not iffy, or based upon future requirements) Rom. 5:9
“Praise ye the Lord, O praise Him every nation, Grace is free! Yes, grace is free! Jesus hath wrought a wonderful salvation, Grace is free! Yes, grace is free!”
II. Through Faith Salvation is Applied: (channel, medium, conduit) God has created faith to be a receiver; unites us to Christ; enables us to cling to Him in a vital union.
“In my hand no price I bring Simply to the cross I cling”
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
III. Faith is generated by God: Eph. 1:19; Phil. 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; 2 Pet. 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Heb 12:2 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 6:37, 44-45 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. Acts 18:27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 2 Thes 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: Acts 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
*Now, by this grace or pure favor of God we are saved through faith, faith itself being the special gift of God; and thus the very medium by which we receive salvation, and become manifestly interested in it, is not of ourselves. The eye which sees salvation in the person and work of the Son of God, the ear which hears and receives the glad tidings, the hand which lays hold of and embraces the Savior in his atoning blood and justifying obedience, are all the special gift of God. Do we see Jesus and salvation in and through him? God has opened our eyes to see. Have we heard his blessed voice? God has given us ears to hear. Have we laid hold of him, and brought him into our heart in all his saving benefits and blessings? God gave us that faith by revealing his dear Son in us, and making him spiritually and experimentally known to our souls. J. C. Philpott

“Come, ye dead, Christless, unconverted sinner, come and see the place where they laid the body of the deceased Lazarus; behold him laid out, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, locked up and stinking in a dark cave, with a great stone placed on top of it. View him again and again; go nearer to him; be not afraid; smell him, Ah! how he stinketh. Stop there now, pause a while; and whilst thou art gazing upon the corpse of Lazarus, give me leave to tell thee with great plainness, but greater love, that this dead, bound, entombed, stinking carcase, is but a faint representation of thy poor soul in it natural state;...thy spirit which thou bearest about with thee, sepulchered in flesh and blood, is literally dead to God, and as truly dead in trespasses and sins, as the body of Lazarus was in the cave. Was he bound hand and foot with graveclothes? So art thou bound hand and foot with thy corruptions; and as a stone was laid on the sepulchre, so there is a stone of unbelief upon thy stupid heart. Perhaps thou has lain in this estate, not only four days, but many years, stinking in God’s nostrils. And, what is still more effecting, thou art as unable to raise thyself out of this loathsome, dead state, to a life of righteousness and true holiness, as ever Lazarus was to raise himself from the cave in which he lay so long. Thou mayest try the power of thy boasted free will, and the force and energy of moral persuasion and rational arguments (which, without doubt, have their proper place in religion); but all thy efforts, exerted with never so much vigor, will prove quite fruitless and abortive, till that same Jesus, who said ‘take away the stone” and cried “Lazarus, come forth,” also quicken you." The London Confession of 1689 Lesson 3
London Confession of faith
Lesson 3
Chapter 1 Paragraphs 1-5
I. Scripture is the Rule of all Knowledge, Faith and Obedience (1.1)
A. General Revelation is Witnessed through Nature, Creation and Providence
1. What General Revelation Can Manifest
2. What General Revelation Cannot manifest
B. God Declared His Will Through Special Revelation
1. At Sundry Times and Divers Manners (Theophanies, Dreams, Visions, etc.)
2. God Determined to Commit His Word Presently in Written Form
(1. 1) The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith and obedience [2Ti 3:15-17; Isa 8:20; Lk 16:29,31; Eph 2:20], although the light of nature and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God and His will which is necessary unto salvation [Ro 1:19-21; 2:14-15; Ps 19:1-3]. Therefore it pleased the Lord at sundry times and in divers manners to reveal Himself, and to declare that His will unto His church [Heb 1:1]; and afterwards for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which maketh the Holy Scriptures to be most necessary, those former ways of God's revealing His will unto His people being now ceased [Pr 22:19-21; Ro 15:4; 2Pe 1:19-20].
II. The Content of God’s Word (1.2-3)
A. God’s Word Includes 66 Books of the Old and New Testaments
B. God’s Word Excludes the Apocrypha
C. All 66 Books are Inspired by God
(1.2) Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God written, are now contained all the books of the Old and New Testaments, which are these:
Of the Old Testament
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
Of the New Testament
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude, Revelation
All of which are given by the inspiration of God, to be the rule of faith and life [2Ti 3:16].
(1.3) The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon or rule of the Scripture, and, therefore, are of no authority to the church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved or made use of than other human writings [Lk 24:27,44; Ro 3:2].
III. The Authority of God’s Word (1. 4-5)
A. The Authority for God’s Word Rests With God
B. Proof of Authority
C. Persuasion and Assurance of Proof Comes by the Internal Persuasion of the Holy Spirit
(1.4) The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God(who is truth itself), the author thereof; therefore it is to be received because it is the Word of God [2Pe 1:19-21; 2Ti 3:16; 2Th 2:13; 1Jn 5:9].
(1. 5) We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the church of God to an high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scriptures; and the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, and the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole(which is to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man's salvation, and many other incomparable excellencies, and entire perfections thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God; yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth, and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts [Jn 16:13-14; 1Co 2:10-12, 1Jn 2:20,27].

August Meeting
We were wonderfully blessed at Eureka during our August Meeting (Aug. 7-9). Elder Lasserre Bradley, Jr. was our invited speaker, and he preached four powerful messages that exalted the name of God and revealed our great need of grace. Also, I was very thankful for the diligent work and labor by the members of Eureka before and during the meeting. We all were extremely happy at the large number of visitors from our community that came to worship with us during the services. Praise the Lord!

Lesson 2 Baptist Confessions
1689 LCoF) CH. 1 Paragraph 1. The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible1 rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience, although the 2light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God and his will which is necessary unto salvation.3 Therefore it pleased the Lord at sundry times and in divers manners to reveal himself, and to declare that his will unto his church; and afterward for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto4 writing; which maketh the Holy Scriptures to be most necessary, those former ways of God's revealing his will unto his people being now ceased.12 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; Ephesians 2:20; 2Romans 1:19-21; Romans 2:14,15; Psalms 19:1-3; 3Hebrews 1:1; 4Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19,20
(Eureka; Article 2) We believe the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired written Word of God and the only rule of faith, and that the New Testament is the rule of practice for the Church of the living God (2 Timothy 3:16).
(1777 Kehukee Association Articles of Faith; Article 2) We believe that almighty God has made known His mind and will to the children of men in His word which word we believe to be of divine authority, and contains all things necessary to be made known for the salvation of men and women. The same is comprehended or contained in the Books of the Old and New Testament as are commonly received.”
Outline of 1689 LCF:
I. The Necessity of Scripture. The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible1 rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; Ephesians 2:20)
II. The Insufficiency of General Revelation.
A) General Revelation Can “manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable” (Romans 1:19-21; 2:14, 15; Psalm 19:1-3).
B) General Revelation Cannot “give that knowledge of God and his will which is necessary unto salvation.”
III. God’s Purpose for Inscripturation (writing down truth that has been revealed).
“It pleased the Lord at sundry times and in divers manners to reveal himself, and to declare that his will unto his church; and afterward for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto4 writing; which maketh the Holy Scriptures to be most necessary , those former ways of God's revealing his will unto his people being now ceased.” (Hebrews 1:1; Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19, 20).

Quote from Sinclair B Ferguson
On Sunday (July 12) I continued preaching expository messages from Ephesians (1:8-10) to my enjoyment. As I was preparing and continuing the study privately today in Ephesians I came across this quote from Sinclair Ferguson that was rich from Ephesians 1:11, "In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will." Ferguson wrote:
But his glory is not the enemy of our good. In fact he pursues
his own glory in such a way that he simultaneously brings his people most
blessing! His pleasure and our blessing are marriage partners! This is a
commitment from which he will never withdraw.

The Sweetness of Predestination
Eph. 1:5-6
Eph. 1:5-6
I. Predestination, A Biblical Expression: “everlasting decree, determination in advance, predetermine” (Rom. 8:29-30; Eph. 1:11)
II. Blessing Bestowed: Adoption, “putting into God’s family” (Gal. 4:5-6; Rom. 8:14)
*Proof of:
A. Faith (John 1:12-13; Gal. 3:26) B. Love for Christ (John 8:42) C. Prayer (Rom. 8:15)
III. Ground of Predestination---Good pleasure (1:9; Phil. 2:13; Matt. 11:26; Gal. 1:15; 1 Cor. 1:21) of His will (Dan. 4:35; Eph. 1:9, 11)
IV. Ultimate Goal---Praise (adoration) of the glory (excellence) of His grace (undeserved favor) (6, 12, 14)
Hodge “The design of redemption, therefore, is to exhibit the grace of God in such a conspicuous manner as to fill all hearts with wonder and all lips with praise” Hodge
"But now let us fall down before the majesty of our good God, with acknowledgement of our faults, praying him to acquaint us more and more with them, that we may be brought to true repentance. And let us condemn ourselves and seek to find in our Lord Jesus Christ all that we need, and that not for one day, or for a mere brief moment, but continually and steadfastly to our life’s end. And whatever happens to us, let us always assure ourselves that we have good cause to praise our God, and that even if we are poor and miserable in this world, the happiness of heaven is enough to appease us, to sweeten all our afflictions and sorrows, and to give us such content that we may nevertheless have our mouths open to bless God for showing himself so kindhearted and liberal towards us as even to adopt us as his children, and to show us that the heritage which has been purchased for us by the blood of his only Son is ready for us, and that we cannot miss it, seeing that we go to it with true and invincible constancy of faith. May it please him to grant this grace not only to us but also to all peoples." John Calvin
Bible Study Lesson-Outline of the Gospel
Outline For Sharing The Gospel [Gleaned from Will Metzger’s Tell The Truth]
1. God is Creator/Lawgiver: He created us to worship Him and to obey Him and you are responsible to put Him at the center of your life (Revelation 4:11; Acts 17:22-34). Have you heard the story of two roads in life?
2. Life=God-centered Living: God has designed a road that we are to follow by which we can have fellowship with Him now and live with Him eternally. On this road there are two rules which we are to perfectly obey and are for our happiness and safety. One rule is to love God and to make Him the center of your life, and to love Him more than anyone or anything else. And the other rule is to love all people as I love myself, and always do what is best for them (Mark 10:17-27; James 2:8-13; Matt. 5:17-48; Matt. 22:37-40). Have you obeyed these two rules perfectly?
3. Sin=Self-centered Living: Your failure to obey these two rules is called sin. God is holy and hates sin and therefore your relationship with God has been broken. Sin is always punished by God because of His justice. Having become self-centered you are unable to earn God’s love, by nature you are a slave of sin and headed down a road of hopeless eternity (Romans 3:23; 6:23). Are you willing to admit that you have disobeyed God and deserving of His punishment and that you cannot earn His favor by your good deeds and efforts? Do you realize the road of self-centeredness that you are on leads to a place called hell where you are separated from God forever?
4. Good News-Jesus is the Way to Life: God has provided a bridge to Him through Jesus Christ. Jesus became the God-man and perfectly kept God requirements for us and took our sins upon Himself when He died on the cross (2 Cor. 5:21). His actions were approved by God who raised Him from the dead. Jesus died for our sins and has broken the enslavement of sin over our lives (John 19:17-20:31; Romans 5:6-8; 1 Peter 3:18).
5. Your Response-Turning From Self-centeredness to Christ: In light of these powerful truths can you respond wholeheartedly by turning from sin and trusting in Christ as your Savior and surrender to His lordship over your whole life (Mark 1:15; Romans 10:9-10; Luke 9:23-26)? What is your response: A) Receive Christ B) Reject Christ C) Investigate Further
"The Gospel of John"
I purchased an affordable and handy copy pf "The Gospel of John" to share and give out to others. John's purpose in writing was "that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name" (John 20:31). It is easy, therefore, to take a few examples from Christ's miracles in John and share by reading it to others. And conclude with the crucifixion and resurrection in chapters 20 & 21.
After I shared the Gospel of John with this man, I saw him later reading from it. I pray that it will be powerful to his soul!
Tell the Truth
I have completed "Tell the Truth" by Will Metzger and thoroughly enjoyed his help on bold witnessing for Christ. With Metzger's understanding of man's inability and God's sovereignty, I was challenged and encouraged by his example, biblical content, and personal ideas in sharing the good news of salvation through a crucified and resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ. I have used a lot of his material in our Wednesday night Bible Study in attempting to equip Eureka in making known Christ's glory to others. I recommend this book to others as we cultivate a heart for witnessing to others about Christ.

Notes From Bible Study
How To Witness To People or Personal Evangelism (2)
A God/Christ-Centered Gospel
I. God is a Holy Creator: Rev. 4:11; 15:4; Hab. 1:13
II. Man is Sinful: Rom. 3:10-19
A. Realize that man is separated from God (Rom. 8:7)
B. Convinced of personal sins (Psalm 51:4)
C. Convinced of sinfulness (Isa. 6:5)
D. Use of the law (Gal. 3:24; Matt. 19:16-22; 22:37-40; James 2:10)
III. Christ is the only Remedy (Acts 4:12; 1 Peter 3:18; John 14:6; 2 Cor. 5:21) Not: “Your Best Life Now, 7 Steps to Living @ Your Full Potential” “Becoming A Better You, 7 Steps to Improving Your Every Day” Appealing to: God wants you to be happy, meaning in life, joy, peace, doing better
IV. Urging a Biblical Response (Acts 20:21; Mark 1:15; Isa. 45:22; Acts 2:36; Rom. 10:9-10; John 16:8-11) [Faith w/o repentance is presumption & repentance w/o faith is legalism] Turning from sin, trusting in Christ as Savior, owning Christ as Lord and King, and seeking to live for His glory! Not psychological pressure, leading in sinner’s prayer, signing a card, etc.

How To Witness (1)
Our Bible Study Wednesday night was attempting to answer the question, "How do you witness to people?" This is a topic I certainly desire to know more about and practice more efficiently and faithfully. I have gleaned some information from Mark Dever's "Personal Evangelism." Here are the notes from Lesson 1:
How To Witness To People or Personal Evangelism (1)
(Matt. 24:14; John 1:7, 8; Acts 1:8; 8:4)
I. What are we to witness concerning or proclaim? Answer: The gospel of Jesus Christ (Mark 16:15).
[Evangelism---”The spreading of the gospel by preaching or personal witness.”]
A. The gospel is not:
1) Talking about conservative politics/cultural values/social change
2) Our personal testimony (Mark 5:20)
3) Apologetics (1 Peter 3:15)
4) Attempting to get people to: do better and live rightly, obey the 10 Commandments, go to church
5) Expressing that Jesus: has a plan for your life, is your friend, wants you to be happy, etc.
6) Defending or proclaiming the doctrines of grace (1 Corinthians 3:1, 2)
B. The gospel is:
1) Good news that Jesus came into the world to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15)
2) Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and raised again (1 Corinthians 15:3, 4)
3) “There is one true and living God. God created us for His own glory and in His own image, but we ‘all have sinned’ and offended God’s justice. The Bible teaches that ‘the wages of sin is death.’ By our sins and transgressions we have separated ourselves from God and are deserving of everlasting punishment. But God, because of his great love and mercy, sent His own Son into the world to die for our sins. Jesus became a man and died on a cross, ‘the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.’ Jesus was buried and rose again after three days. He ascended to heaven and promised to return in the future. Now God calls upon us to repent and believe the gospel. God said, ‘He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.’ God promised that whosoever believeth in Jesus shall receive forgiveness of sins (Acts 10:43) and all that believe are justified from all things (Acts 13:39).
***Mark Dever, The Gospel & Personal Evangelism “We don’t fail in our evangelism if we faithfully tell the gospel to someone who is not subsequently converted; we fail only if we do not faithfully tell the gospel at all.”

Baptism of my son, Zebedee
Zebedee, my eight year old son, had told me recently of how God had "touched his heart" because he "used to hate church" but was now "enjoying church and prayer meetings." I had told him that I was thankful but was cautious not to overdo my enthusiasm because I did not want his motive to be my pleasure and approval. On Sunday morning (June 7) I noticed Zeb was emotional and shedding tears during the invitational hymn. At Eureka we hold a handshake where the congregation comes around and shakes the preacher's hand after or during the invitational hymn. As Zeb came around he expressed his desire for baptism. I questioned Zeb publicly concerning his faith in Christ, his knowledge that he was a sinner, and of his desire to live for the glory of Christ. Zeb's answers satisfied the church and I had the privilege of baptizing him in the evening service.
Time will manifest if Zeb's profession was Spirit induced, and it is the present hope of his parents that his profession was because the omnipotent Spirit has drawn him to Christ and the Lord was pleased to hear the prayers of his parents concerning his salvation; a prayer that has been offered to the Lord every day of his life since his birth (and even prior after we knew of his conception). Praise the Lord!
Youth Conference
Our Youth Conference was blessed! We had around 25 teenagers in attendance as we meditated on the "Majesty of Christ." The sessions included Christ,:
1. The Supremacy of
2. A Lamb Slain from the Foundation of the World
3. The Focus of Scripture
4. Being Conformed to His Image
5. Evangelizing
Bro. Matt Strevel presented the last two topics and I presented the first three. We also did a little role-playing on witnessing at the conclusion. On Friday night, a worship service was held for everyone and Bro. Jimmy Fulmer preached on the topic, "The Majesty of Christ." Great preaching, great topic!
We had a great time learning more about Christ, enjoying fellowship with one another, and a lot of fun as well. The young men and women were very attentive and well behaved and wanted to hold another conference in the future. My prayer is God will continue to stir their souls to seek the beauty of Christ's majesty and the seed that was sown will bring forth fruit for God's glory.

The Real Reasons for Revival
Last night (Monday, June 1) I really enjoyed the monthly prayer meeting at Eureka. The attendance was up from the usual number. But that was not the reason for the enjoyment and delight---the Spirit of God was with us and we pleaded with God to glorify Himself through us. The theme for the prayer meeting was "Revival." I came across a sermon by D. Martyn Lloyd Jones, "The Real Reasons for Revival" and read highlights from it. The three reasons we are to pray for revival are:
1. The glory of God
2. The honor of the Church
3. Those who are outside the Church may be converted
The following is an excerpt from the sermon by Jones.
"Now, we cannot go into all these points in detail, but this is the thing that matters is it not? The Church, after all, is the Church of God. 'She is His new creation, by water and word.' We are a people for God's own peculiar possession. And why has he called us out of darkness into his own marvellous light? Surely it is that we may show forth his praises, his excellencies, his virtues. And, therefore, we should be concerned about this matter primarily because of the name, and the glory, the honour of God himself. Whether we like it or not, it is a fact that the world judges God himself, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the whole of the Christian faith, by what it sees in us. We are his representatives, we are the people who take his name upon us, we are the people who talk about him, and the man outside the Church regards the Church as the representative of God. And, therefore, I argue that we must emulate the example of Moses, as we find it here. Our first concern should be about the glory of God."

Call From UK
I am delighted that the excerpts from James Osbourn's "The Lawful Captive Delivered" is being read and enjoyed. Could the person from The United Kingdom who left a message email me at jameytucker@aol.com or try calling me again. I would enjoy the correspondence!

"The Lawful Captive Delivered" p 72
James Osbourn labored under the conviction of sin for many months and attempted to appease God's wrath by keeping the law of God, but to no avail. Again, his testimony is a reminder of what God's word expresses to us; that righteousness cannot come by our efforts to keep the law. "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20). The sweetness of a sinner that confides in Christ's righteousness and finds complete and perfect salvation cannot be properly described. But the sweetness is delightful and refreshing to the soul. Below is Osbourn's account of trusting in Christ's righteousness for justification.
"I now saw so much beauty and worth in Christ and the gospel, as no man can see, or feel, or know anything of, but by the Spirit of the living God. It was more than mere motion or whim, or a simple flight of the imagination. And it was more than a dream or an idle fancy, or the animal passions roused. It also was more, much more, than a false light, or a fantastical faith, or an historical faith, or a delusive impression. Yes, it was more, and a vast deal more, than what any carnal professor, or hypocrite, or impostor, as such, ever saw, or felt, or found, or tasted, or handled, for it was Christ in me the hope of glory, Col. 1:27."

"The Lawful Captive Delivered" pp 34, 35
James Osbourn, in his autobiography, detailed how he labored exceedingly to cleanse his heart before God and merit God's favor through his own righteousness. He labored legalistically until he gave His soul into the hands of the great Physician. He would later write a poem describing his conversion which I share with you in part:
"At length the dear Savior of sinners appear'd,
With balm in his hand for my smart;
And from me he banish'd the evils I fear'd,
And bound up the wound in my heart.
And here I obtain'd a divorce from the law,
And freedom from terror and dread;
And in the clear light of the gospel I saw
My soul unto Jesus was wed.
And to me this Jesus was lovely and sweet,
And brighter by far than the sun;
And gladly I bow'd myself down at his feet,
And thank'd him for what he had done.
And while was there I discover'd that grace
Was then at my humble request;
For to me he said, with a smile in his face,
'My bosom's the place of thy rest.
And here thou in safety may take thy repose,
And feast on ineffable love;
Though this is a favour I grant but to those
Who're born unto me from above.'"

"The Lawful Captive Delivered" pp. 28, 29
Returning to James Osbourn's autobiography, "A Lawful Captive Delivered," I want to examine a few of his thoughts on his experience in conversion. In part II Brother Osbourn related how he was convicted of sin and how he tried to earn God's favor with a pharisaical spirit. Naturally, the peace he experienced was temporary and deceptive and was not the production of God's Spirit (Isaiah 54:13). However, in God's time James Osbourn would experience the freedom that is found in Christ alone. As a side not, have you noticed how often christians in days past would undergo great struggles with sin's conviction and prolonged attempts to secure their own righteousness, before God mercifully revealed His grace in Christ. Powerful and radical conversions were often seen in the lives of God's people. May God be pleased to so work in our lives and in our time is my prayer!
"I may well wonder at the goodness of the Lord to me in bringing me out of so sad a condition as then I was in, as there was nothing in me that could have moved him so to act, and yet so he acted towards me; for in his own good time he dispelled from my mind that old covenant mist, and busted my pharisaical bands, and set the Lawful Captive free. Those bands would for ever have kept my soul in bondage, had not the Lord interfered in my behalf, for by them I was tied fast. Yes, I was so completely duped by this self-righteous spirit, that I really thought it was the spirit of the Lord directing me how, and in what way I should proceed so as to obtain peace and rest in this world, and in the end everlasting life; and doubtless this cheat would have proved my overthrow at last, had it not pleased God to break the snare, and to direct me to his dear Son, who 'is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth,' Romans 10:4."

The Everlasting Covenant
I began a short series on "The Everlasting Covenant" on Sunday. In reading after Wilhelmus a Brakel I came across this quote that blessed my soul. The reason I especially enjoy this reformed theologian is because his theology is joined with rich devotion. Enjoy the sweetness of this quote that magnifies the grace in Christ and incites us to praise!
"Who can give expression to the magnitude of this felicity? It consists in being overshadowed with God's gracious presence; to be surrounded with His supporting and preserving omnipotence; to rest in His unfailing faithfulness; to rejoice in God's eternal fullness, majesty and glory: to be enlightened by His light, goodness, and love; to be satisfied with His all-sufficiency; to lose oneself in His infinity and incomprehensibility; to bow before Him with delight and love; to be subject to Him; and to worship Him. This felicity consists in rendering Him honor and glory with heart, tongue, and deeds---being conscious of His perfections and because He is so worthy of this. In consists in fearing Him, in serving Him, and a complete and full acquiescence in His will because He is God. This felicity is such that I can neither comprehend it, nor can you define it. Rather, we must lose ourselves in its infinity, exclaiming, 'Hallelujah', 'Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD' (Psa. 33:12)!"

A Few Thoughts
These thoughts did not originate with me but with Frances Turretin in "Institutes of Elenctic Theology." However, they are biblical based and worthy of sharing. When writing on the subject of the everlasting covenant of grace Turretin communicated the different means or ways in which the covenant has been revealed or administered (the seed of the woman in Genesis 3:15, Abrahamic, Davidic, Mosaic covenants). However, he also described the richness of the revelation that we have today compared to the days before Christ's salvific work at Calvary. The old and new covenants were differentiated by:
1. Time---Before and after Christ
2. Clarity---mysteries are now more clearly revealed
3. Easiness---service was more burdensome under the law (Matt. 11:28-30)
4. Sweetness---Gospel promises are more frequent
5. Freedom---Through the infusion of the Holy Spirit
6. Amplitude---Universality of the gospel proclamation
7. Duration---No other revelation is to be given
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him? (Hebrews 2:3)

Eureka's May Meeting
Pastor Jeff Winfrey from Dawson Springs, KY preached for us at Eureka during our May Meeting (May 7-9). The Lord was good to all of us as Bro. Jeff's preaching was saturated with Jesus! On Thursday night Bro. Jeff preached on the subject of "Peace." We were glad to have with us on Thursday night Bro. Jeff Pangle, the pastor of Missionary Baptist Church in our community, along with his wife. It was their first visit with us and in a Primitive Baptist service and we were glad they came. On Friday night Bro. Jeff preached about the resurrection of Jesus and the vast importance of this historical event. The meeting closed Saturday morning with the topic on "Better Things" from Hebrews. The congregation was made to worship our Lord through the testimony of the word and the exaltation of Christ. Praise the Lord!
Our Trip To Cincinnati
The Lord blessed me and my family to participate in the Family Worship Meeting in Cincinnati, OH May 1-3. Our family has been blessed by the ministry of Pastor Lasserre Bradley, Jr. for many years. We greatly enjoyed the fellowship with Brother and Sister Bradley in their home as they were gracious hosts in caring for us. Also, we delighted in our visitation with Bro. Justin Huffman, Cincinnati's Associate Pastor, and to see his and Sister Chau's newly adopted children and to renew acquaintance with Edmond.
The meeting was a real source of encouragement for all of us. The spiritual conversations and support from other young families was refreshing and edifying. We are anticipating with prayer and excitement the appointments for Bro. Bradley at Eureka in the month of August.

James Osbourn-"The Lawful Captive Delivered"
"But that grace should respect me, and single me out from others, and save my soul, is to be admired and spoken of with feelings of great gratitude: nor can I now well keep from saying, 'Why me, Lord; why me?' By nature there never was anything in me worth grace's notice; and grace might just as well have sought for merit in a nonentity as to have sought for it in me. Grace, therefore, in raising me up from what the Psalmist David calls the 'horrible pit and miry clay,' had to do it at its own expense, for I in no wise could help. And hence, in this respect, salvation came cheap to me, for it cost me nothing. I gained not heaven by toiling nor by spinning; and yet I can say unto my reader, 'that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like my soul.'"(p 12)
Pastor Jamey's Comment---Cheap grace! James Osbourn was describing the riches of God's grace in lavishing and bestowing unmerited favor upon him apart from anything good within him. But James Osbourn recognized that grace was costly in that God raised him from the pit at His (God's) own expense. Grace is free in that we do not earn it but grace came by Christ Jesus' pain and death!
However, a century later Dietrich Bonhoeffer used the expression "cheap grace" to describe salvation received that called for no self denial in the one who received grace. Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran minister in Germany during Hitler's regime and operated an underground seminary. He eventually was executed for his faith. He wrote: "cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ."
The context of Osbourn's quote was affirming the free nature of grace (free grace is like describing water as being wet) received, separate and apart from any decision or activity in the sinner. Bonhoeffer was refuting the idea of his day that salvation made no change or demand in the recipient of grace. Both ideas of "cheap grace" are true. Grace is received freely, and the assurance that grace is received is expressed through obedience. "And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it" (Matthew 10:38, 39).

Bible Lesson IV-Christ in the OT
Christ In The Old Testament
Lesson IV
Types of Christ
Lesson IV
Types of Christ
Jesus Christ can be seen through several Old Testament people called types. A type is “a person or thing symbolizing or exemplifying the ideal or defining characteristics of something.” This study focuses on people who represent Christ. Again, we do not want to force or strain the comparison or try and take the comparison too far. Types are to supplement and not to be primary sources of doctrine.
1. Adam (Romans 5:14; 1 Corinthians 15:21, 22; 15:45-49)
2. Aaron (Hebrews 5:4-6)
3. Isaac (Hebrews 11:17-19)
4. David (King & Shepherd)
5. Joseph (Genesis 38; 41:40-50:20)
6. Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15; Hebrews 3:1-6)
7. Jonah (Matthew 12:40; Jonah 1:17)
8. Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:1-21)
9. Solomon (1 Kings 2:12)

The Lawful Captive Delivered (III)
From James Osbourn's Autobiography, "A Lawful Captive Delivered" (p. 11)
"But although my mind was become so sordid and corrupt, and opposed to every good thing serious and solemn; yet eternity would at times bring me to a stand and to very close thinking, and very much would it damp my thirst for sin and vanity. Indeed it would spoil all the pleasures of sin, and throw my mind into a state of melancholy and great bitterness, insomuch that my life would be a burden to me. But as soon as ever the thoughts of futurity and of a judgment to come would wear off from my mind, my former thirst for sin and folly would return again, and great happiness I have promised myself in the practice of vice. And thus did Satan strive to lead me blindfolded on to ruin before I arrived to the years of manhood, or else to make a tool of me through life to ensnare others, and then sink me down into endless nights, where hope is not known and mercy never visits. And to this end I assuredly should have been brought but for the grace of God; and hence, to grace, and nothing else but grace, can I attribute my escape from endless woe. And that the Almighty should avert so dire a doom in my instance, is a marvellous circumstance, and a striking confirmation of the truth of these words, 'I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion' (Romans 9:15)."
Comment-I really enjoyed and delighted in Brother Osbourn attributing his deliverance "to grace, and nothing else but grace." That too is my conviction based upon the Bible and from experience. We deserve justice but God has delighted in extending mercy to the undeserving. The expression in Romans 9:15 reveals the reality that mercy and compassion are gifts extended to sinners. The cause in extending the gifts are not because of what God sees in man (not his effort nor decision) but in the majestic sovereignty of God.

The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower (Prov. 18:10)
Last week there were some rather violent storms in our community. One in particular caused some concern for us, so the children were made to gather together in an inner closet for shelter. This reminded me of the protection afforded to those who run to God by faith to find security from His wrath and from the dangerous attacks from the enemies of Christ in the world. God's name is called a strong tower. Let's look at some compound names of God and find peace and joy in the truth the names reveal.
1. Jehovah Elyon ((Pss. 7:17; 47:2; 97:9) Jehovah Most High
2. Jehovah Jireh (Gen. 22:14) The Lord Who Sees, The Lord will Provide(Matt. 6:25; Phil. 4:19; Eph 1:3)
3. Jehovah Mekeddeshem (Ex. 31:13; Lev. 20:7-8) The Lord Who Sanctifies (Pet. 2:9; 1:13-15; Heb. 10:10, 14; John 17:17; Thes. 5:23; Eph. 5:26); 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Thes. 2:13)
4. Jehovah Nissi (Exodus 17:15) The Lord our Banner (Fighting under His colors) Ps. 60:4 (Gal. 5:17; Pet. 5:7; Eph. 6:18; Rom. 8:37; 1 John 5:4-5)
5.Jehovah Rohi (Roi) (Psalm 23:1) The Lord is My Shepherd (John 10:11; Pet. 2:25; 5:4; Hebrews 13:20; Luke 15:4)
6. Jehovah Rophe (Rapha) The Lord our Healer (Exodus 15:26) James 5;16; Pet 2:24; Pss. 41:4; 147:3; Matt. 9:12; Luke 4:18)
7. Jehovah Sabaoth (Isa. 44:6; Sam 1:3) The Lord of Hosts (Armies) (Supremacy over all creatures) (Isa. 44:6; Rev. 17:14; Ps. 46:7, 11)
8. Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24) The Lord our Peace (Col. 1:20; Rom 5:1; Eph. 2:18; Phil. 4:8; Isa. 26:3-4)
9. Jehovah Shammah (Ezek. 48:35) The Lord is Present (Matt. 28:20; Matt. 1:25; Heb 13:5; Rev. 22:3)
10. Jehovah Tsidkenu (Jer. 23:6) The Lord our Righteousness (Cor. 1:30; Rom 3:22, 25, 26; Phil. 3:9)
James Osbourn-"The Lawful Captive Delivered"
"I also in those days experienced some very narrow escapes from death in different ways, which manifestly declared the providential care of the Lord over me when in a blind and ignorant state; but I saw not the hand of God in those matters, though at times he hath made me tremble by causing death and another world to make so powerful a seizure of my mind as to cause me to look with dread on futurity. By how anyone could avoid sinking down into a world of misery, I knew nothing about; nor was there, as I said before, any person in the parish as I ever heard of that could teach me the way of life. And thus I had to stumble upon the dark mountains without a guide for my feet. But still I believe that God's eye was upon me, and that in all my wanderings, he never once lost sight of me, but followed me with judgments and mercies, and took special care of me when I could not take care of myself." (p.8)
James Osbourn in his autobiography, "A Lawful Captive Delivered," expresses God's government and protection over his natural life before his conversion. How reassuring to realize God will not lose a single soul that has been chosen to salvation (2 Thess. 2:13; John 6:37). In order to accomplish the application of redemption God will protect that person's life until the work of God has been effectually given to the soul. Peter expresses this point in 2 Peter 3:9:
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
I know that some have thought God's will in this verse was His desire to save but the accomplishment of actual deliverance was contingent upon the sinner's will. However, Peter is writing of God's decree or will that shall come to pass (Isa. 46:9, 10) upon the us-ward, or the elect (1 Peter 1:2) and beloved (2 Peter 3:1). God will certainly bring all of the elect to repentance so that none perish. He accomplishes this by preserving our natural lives until that experience and assuring the experience by irresistible grace (John 10:27-29).

This is the most recent photo of the orphanage in Cambodia from my trip in April supported through Pure Religion Ministries. The children were very healthy and happy, and they continue to grow spiritually under the supervision of Brother Dara and the staff. In fact, the boy second from the left in the row standing is now first academically in his class of forty. Initially, when he came to the orphahange he could not read. Most of the children have confessed Christ and followed him in baptism, as has the staff. We praise the Lord for His tender mercies.

Christ in the Old Testament (III)
Christ in the Old Testament
Lesson 3
Symbols
Christ is the center of both redemptive history and the Bible (John 5:39). In our last study we observed Christ in the Old Testament through prophecies. This study will view Christ through symbols. A symbol is “a thing that represents something else.” In our study we will see Christ represented or seen through several objects in the Old Testament. Again, we do not desire to force Christ unnaturally in every object, nor do we want to appear spiritually perceptive by making every tangible object symbolize Christ Jesus. Our purpose however is to encourage the Bible reader to concentrate on the great design and theme of the Scripture, Jesus Christ (Luke 24:25-27). My prayer is that this study will help us develop a lens to clearly see Christ our Lord.
1. Coats of Skin (Genesis 3:21) ---Jesus’ imputed righteousness
Isaiah 61:10 “I will rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”
2. A Ram in a Thicket (Genesis 22:10-14)---Jesus’ vicarious atonement
1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.”
1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.”
3. Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28:10-22)---Jesus, the Mediator
John 1:51 “And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
John 1:51 “And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
4. The Passover (Exodus 12:1-13)---Christ, Our Passover
1 Corinthians 5:7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”
1 Corinthians 5:7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”
5. Manna from Heaven (Exodus 16:11-18, 31)---Jesus, the Giver of Life
John 6:33 “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”
John 6:33 “For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”
6. The Rock (Exodus 17:1-7)---Jesus, from Whom all Blessings Flow
1 Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”
1 Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”
7. The Fiery Serpent (Numbers 21:4-9)---Christ, the Crucified
John 3:14, 15 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 3:14, 15 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
Christ in the OT (II)
Christ in the Old Testament
Lesson 2
Prophecies of Christ in the Old Testament
1 Peter 1:10-12 “Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.”
The theme of redemptive history is the focus of the Bible, which includes the Old Testament. The focal point of redemptive history centers on Christ Jesus because His death brought salvation, and, therefore, Scripture testifies of Jesus primarily (Luke 24:25-27, 44-46; John 5:39; 8:58; Acts 10:43; 26:22, 23; 28:23; Romans 1:2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Peter 1:10-12). Last week we referred to six ways the Old Testament testified and revealed Christ (prophecies, types, theophanies, symbols, characters, themes).
The study this week will include prophecies in the Old Testament that witnessed of Jesus Christ, His sufferings and glory. The prophecies foretold and predicted Christ’s birth, ministry, sufferings, death, resurrection, and ascension. The prophets were enabled to predict these events by the inspiration of the Spirit. These prophetic fulfillments in Christ are often used in Christian Apologetics to confirm the inspiration of Scripture and Christ’s deity. However, these prophecies are a rich treasure of scriptures that should fill the believer’s heart with devotion and adoration for God’s unspeakable gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Genesis 3:15-Galatians 4:4; Genesis 12:3-Matthew 1:1; Genesis 17:19-Matthew 1:2; Numbers 24:17-Matthew 1:2; Genesis 49:10-Matthew 1:2; Isaiah 9:6-Luke 1:32, 33; Isaiah 7:14-Luke 1:26-31; Hosea 11:1-Matthew 2:14; Isaiah 9:1-2-Matthew 4:13-16; Isaiah 61:1, 2-Luke 4:16-21; Deuteronomy 18:15-Acts 3:22; Zechariah 9:9-Mark 11:7-11; Psalm 22:1-Matthew 27:46; Psalm 22:18-John 19:24; Zechariah 12:10-John 19:37; Psalm 69:21-Matthew 27:34; Isaiah 53:9-Matthew 27:57-60; Psalm 16:10-Acts 2:27; Psalm 68:18-Ephesians 4:8
Christ in the OT (I)
Christ in the Old Testament
Lesson 1
Overview
Jesus Christ is the theme of redemptive history as recorded in Scripture. He is the focal point of the Bible upon whom our salvation hinges and by whom God is glorified. Obviously, Christ is the center of the New Testament revelation, but He also permeates the Old Testament revelation (Luke 24:25-27, 44-46; John 5:39; 8:58; Acts 10:43; 26:22, 23; 28:23; Romans 1:2; 2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Peter 1:10-12). Since Christ is the object of our worship and the essential subject of the entire Bible, our study, reading, meditation, and preaching must revolve around Christ Jesus and the center-piece of redemption, the cross.Searching the Old Testament Scriptures for Christ does not mean that we disregard the historical significance of the message, nor are we to allegorize (spiritualize) God’s word so that Christ is forced unnaturally into the lesson. Rather, we naturally see Christ as the centerpiece of God’s purpose to glorify Himself as that purpose converges upon Christ.
Some helpful guides to better view Christ can include:
1. Prophecy: Genesis 3:15 (the seed of the woman); Isaiah 7:14 (Immanuel)
2. Types: Passover (Exodus 12); Tabernacle (Exodus 25:40)
3. Theophanies: The Angel of the Lord (Genesis 22:11; Exodus 3:2)
4. Symbols: Rock (1 Cor. 10:4); Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28:12)
5. Characters: Joseph, David, Melchizedek
6. Themes: Victory in battle, righteous reign, overruling of sin
An example of viewing Christ from the Old Testament:
In the reign of Jehoshaphat this week in my personal devotion from 2 Chronicles 17 I saw a picture of Christ’s rule. God established Jehoshaphat’s rule with riches and honor so that Judah brought gifts to him (v. 5). Jehoshaphat sent out princes and Levites to teach the people of Judah God’s word (vv. 7-9). Kingdoms came into subjection to him and served him (vv. 10, 11). He grew exceedingly great and built castles and cities (v. 12). Can you view similarities between Jehoshaphat’s reign and Christ’s? Certainly Christ’s rule greatly overshadows Jeshoshaphat’s, but Jesus’ rule is glorious (Luke 1:32). He too sent out princes (apostles and disciples) to establish His word (Matthew 28:18-20). Through His influence and power many bow to His regal authority. His rule will continue and all nations of the world will be overtaken by His greatness and power (Revelation 11:15).
Also, through Jehoshaphat’s failures we are made to appreciate Christ’s reign of true righteousness by way of contrast. Jehoshaphat allied himself with a wicked King, Ahab (2 Chronicles 18:1), and experienced judgment because of his sin (2 Chronicles 19:2). In Christ we view only righteousness and a perfect reign (Hebrews 1:8).

Writings of James Osbourn
In my library I have four books written by James Osbourn. James Osbourn was born in England in 1780, sat under the ministry of the celebrated William Huntington, and converted under the ministry of John Harm. Later, Osbourn moved to America and was blessed to preach extensively and to write several books. Historian Sylvster Hassell said of him that he "was an Englishman, who traveled and preached much , and wrote many religious books." He was a part of the presbytery that ordained Sylveter Hassell's father, C. B. Hassell. Osbourn's autobiography is "The Lawful Captive Delivered." I will try to post some excerpts and make a few comments as I read through the book.
"Whereas, it is now my intention to set forth in order before the Church of Christ, an account of the gracious dealings of God with my soul, from the commencement of my inward trouble and distress from a sense of sin and of my lost condition; surely a recital of some little things connected with the first few years of my natural life will not be irrelevant; especially as it is my wish that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ should appear with all the advantages which it assumed when it rescued my soul from ruin. Besides, grace stands so high in my estimation, that I am willing to set forth its aboundings in a way as answerable to its vast worth as I am capable of; and thankful I am to Almighty God, that I have here something to say in commendation of that special grace which saveth sinners from endless woe, and which hath raised me from a low condition, that I 'should walk in newness of life' (Romans 6:4)." The Lawful Captive Delivered, Part I
Comment---Not all, or even most, of us have written an autobiography, but all of us that have been delivered from sin's guilt and power have a narrative of God's grace we should express. May each of us express that testimony with our lips and also by walking in the light and power of Christ and His "special grace which saveth sinners from endless woe."

Jeremiah 31:3
The distinguishing mercy of God in drawing sinners that He has chosen to Himself is often portrayed and caricatured as being heartless and cold. The misunderstanding of some makes God's choice of salvation to be like a magician who reaches into his magical hat and arbitrarily pulls up a handful of names (the elect). And then drags the sinner to Himself kicking and screaming against his will (the sinner's will) because he does not want the gift of righteousness and salvation from the person of Christ. Salvation, election and irresistible grace, is very different from the false impressions above. Election is based upon God's pre-temporal love or foreknowledge (1 Peter 1:2), and God draws the sinner by giving him a will that delights in Christ and the gift of salvation (Psalm 110:3). Read and appreciate the words of Charles Spurgeon from his "Autobiography" as he graphically and picturesquely describes God's distinguishing grace!
"My soul, stand thou at that sacred fountainhead, and adore and magnify for ever and ever God, even our Father, who hath loved us! In the very beginning, when this great universe lay in the mind of God, like unborn forests in the acorn cup; long ere the echoes awoke the solitudes; before the mountains ere brought forth; and long ere the light flashed through the sky, God loved His chosen creatures. Before there was any created being when the ether was not fanned by an angel's wing, when space itself had not an existence, when there was nothing save God alone even then, in that loneliness of Deity, and in that deep quiet and profundity, His heart moved with love for His chosen. Their names were written on His heart, and then were they dear to His soul. Jesus loved His people before the foundation of the world even from eternity! and when He called me by His grace, He said to me, 'I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee.'"

"Sons We Are, Through God's Election
The author of this hymn is unknown, yet, the words and thoughts are not. They are ancient; decreed of God in eternity and manifest to us in God's word (Ephesians 1:4, 5; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 1:9). On my recent trip to Cambodia the question arose (as it often does) concerning God's rejection or passing over of Esau in Romans 9. My response, as it is whenever this question or objection is raised, was to view the wonder of God's grace in the election of Jacob. It is astonishing to imagine God choosing Jacob or any sinner to salvation when all alike deserve His justice, including Esau. I echo the words of the unknown author, "Thanks, eternal thanks to thee!"
Sons we are through God's election
Who in Jesus Christ alone
By eternal destination
Sov'regin grace we here receive
Lord thy mercy, Lord thy mercy
Does both grace and glory give
Ev'ry fallen soul by sinning
Merits everlasting pain
But thy love, without beginning
Has restored thy sons again
Countless Millions, countless millions
Shall in life through Jesus reign
Pause, my soul, adore and wonder
Ask, O why such love for me?
Grace has put me in the number
Of the Saviour's family
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Thanks, eternal thanks to thee!
Since that love had no beginning
And shall never, never cease
Keep, O keep me, Lord from sinning
Guide me in the way of peace!
Make me walk in, Make me walk in
All the paths of holiness
When I quit this feeble mansion
And my soul returns to thee,
Let the pow'r of thy ascension
Manifest itself in me
Through thy Spirit, through thy spirit
Give the final victory!
When the angel sounds the trumpet
When my soul and body join
When my Saviour comes to judgment
Bright in majesty divine
Let me triumph, Let me triumph
In thy righteousness as mine.
When in that blest habitation
Which my God has fore-ordained
When, in glory's full possession
I with saints and angels stand
Free grace only, Free grace only.
Shall resound in heav'n's land
Sons we are through God's election
Who in Jesus Christ alone
By eternal destination
Sov'regin grace we here receive
Lord thy mercy, Lord thy mercy
Does both grace and glory give
Ev'ry fallen soul by sinning

Waiting at the airport
I'm at the international airport in Seoul. I have a nine hour layover, but the airport has a very comfortable area with lounge chairs, internet service, restaurants, etc. Still, I'm ready to get home. My final flight is scheduled to arrive in Atlanta Friday night at 8:45. Jessica and the kids are supposed to pick me up and have two chili-slaw dogs from Nu-way with them for me to eat! The Lord is working and expanding His kingdom in Cambodia, but there is much work to do. I'm so thankful the Lord is directing Joseph Weyel and his family there to minister. Look forward to sharing more once I'm home.

Coming to a conclusion
What a day! We baptized 50 believers this morning and found a Mexican restaurant tonight the day before we leave. The Lord has blessed the trip greatly. We saw evidence of God's power moving in the ministers' conferences and experienced great fellowship among the people of God. The orphanage is being managed in a godly and efficient manner. I look forward to giving a full report at Eureka on Wed. night.

Arrived Safely
Bro. Bobby and I arrived last night around midnight (Wed night) and was greeted by Bro. Dara. Unfortunately we did not receive our luggage (Bro. Bobby's clothes and the medicine I brought for the children). We can pick it up Sunday, however.
I was blessed greatly by Bro. Bobby's devotion this morning in the Guest House from Psalm 113. Bro. Bobby made mention of God's holiness and how He has to bow down just to behold the things in heaven and earth. How rich His mercy to know He considers us and lifts us up from our deplorable condition (dunghill-to be a prince)! He also made mention of Jacob being a prince with God and having power with God through Christ. And how we too have power and are to come to God's throne boldly (Heb. 4:14-16).

Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. |
From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD'S name [is] to be praised. |
The LORD [is] high above all nations, [and] his glory above the heavens. |
Who [is] like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high, |
Who humbleth [himself] to behold [the things that are] in heaven, and in the earth! |
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, [and] lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; |
That he may set [him] with princes, [even] with the princes of his people. |
He maketh the barren woman to keep house, [and to be] a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD. |

Preparation for trip to Cambodia
Today I was busy with preparations for the trip to Cambodia (March 31-April 9). The Lord willing I am to fly out of Atlanta, along with Elder Bobby Poe, at 9:45 AM. The flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia will be through San Francisco and Seoul, Korea. We will hold two ministers' conferences and be able to visit the orphanage for several days. I am really appreciative for the prayers of the Eureka brethren. They also made a collection of helpful medicine to take to the folks and children there. Hope to give you updates when possible. God bless you all.
Zebedee's Top 3
Zebedee gave me his top 3 preachers today.
1. His dad, Jamey Tucker
2. Lasserre Bradley, Jr.
3. Abraham Fulmer
Zeb informed me that Bro. Bradley received the number 2 slot simply because he has been preaching longer than Bro. Abe.

Trip to Cambodia
I will be leaving on Tuesday for Cambodia. The Lord has opened a door of opportunity to preach the message of Christ to the poor people of that nation long embedded in false religion. Too, I will be able to spend several days with the orphanage at Stoung that is supported through Pure Religion Ministries (purereligionministries.com). Pastor Bobby Poe from TN and I will travel together and depart the Atlanta airport March 31 and are returning April 9. I hope you will pray for the effort to preach and minister to the people in Cambodia. We will attempt to give updates when possible during the trip and a more complete report after we return.
"O Sacred Head, Now Wounded"
As we near the end of our study through "The Gospel of Mark" I am awe-struck with appreciation at the depth of Christ's sacrifice for us. The Lord willing our focus Sunday (3-29-09)will be from chapters 14 and 15 on Christ's sufferings and death as the culmination of all redemptive history. My meditations from Christ's death on the cross has directed me to the hymn "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded" by Bernard of Clairvaux (1153). Below are the words to the hymn and a link to Fernando Ortego on YouTube.

O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown;O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine!Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.
What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered, was all for sinners’ gain;Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain.Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve Thy place;Look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace.
Men mock and taunt and jeer Thee, Thou noble countenance,Though mighty worlds shall fear Thee and flee before Thy glance. How art thou pale with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How doth Thy visage languish that once was bright as morn!
Now from Thy cheeks has vanished their color once so fair; From Thy red lips is banished the splendor that was there.Grim death, with cruel rigor, hath robbed Thee of Thy life; Thus Thou hast lost Thy vigor, Thy strength in this sad strife.
My burden in Thy Passion, Lord, Thou hast borne for me,For it was my transgression which brought this woe on Thee.I cast me down before Thee, wrath were my rightful lot;Have mercy, I implore Thee; Redeemer, spurn me not!
What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest friend,For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?O make me Thine forever, and should I fainting be,Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee.
My Shepherd, now receive me; my Guardian, own me Thine.Great blessings Thou didst give me, O source of gifts divine.Thy lips have often fed me with words of truth and love;Thy Spirit oft hath led me to heavenly joys above.
Here I will stand beside Thee, from Thee I will not part;O Savior, do not chide me! When breaks Thy loving heart,When soul and body languish in death’s cold, cruel grasp,Then, in Thy deepest anguish, Thee in mine arms I’ll clasp.
The joy can never be spoken, above all joys beside,When in Thy body broken I thus with safety hide.O Lord of Life, desiring Thy glory now to see,Beside Thy cross expiring, I’d breathe my soul to Thee.
My Savior, be Thou near me when death is at my door; Then let Thy presence cheer me, forsake me nevermore! When soul and body languish, oh, leave me not alone,But take away mine anguish by virtue of Thine own!
Be Thou my consolation, my shield when I must die;Remind me of Thy passion when my last hour draws nigh.Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, upon Thy cross shall dwell,My heart by faith enfolds Thee. Who dieth thus dies well.
